A 3-year funded Ph.D. position is available at the University of Waterloo, Canada to conduct research into novel statistical and computational methods for geospatial pattern and trend detection in the context of interdisciplinary research on landscape and climate change. Remote sensing technologies have been extensively used in agricultural planning and management. Nevertheless, the technologies are not fully capable in various scenarios. In the context of a tropical country like Malaysia, cloud-cover prevents satellite-based optical sensors from capturing viable data in a timely fashion, whereas airborne-based approaches, as on-demand acquisition, can be very costly. The aims of this studentship are:

(1) to evaluate the transferability of satellite-based models of phytoplankton primary production developed for oceans to lakes;

Applications are invited for a 3.5 year PhD studentship, jointly-funded by the British Geological Survey and Newcastle University, commencing September 2013. This will focus on the development of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) based landslide monitoring system. The PhD will be based in the School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences, Newcastle University, and will involve close collaboration with scientists from the British Geological Survey (BGS). UK and EU applicants are eligible for the full studentship, and the position will remain open until filled.
